My song Shway Shway was born from a very simple desire: to have, for once, an ordinary day. In Lebanese Arabic, “shway shway” (شوي شوي) literally means “little by little,” but in everyday speech it can also mean “slowly,” “gently,” “take it easy,” or simply “not so fast.” In the song, it is a small philosophy of resistance to permanent urgency: letting the coffee grow cold, leaving the window open, walking without a destination, listening to a neighbour’s song, worrying about a late bus or a bad little cake … insignificant things that become luxuries when daily life is repeatedly interrupted by crisis, uncertainty and war. “Shway shway” is not an escape from reality, but a wish to recover another rhythm inside it, one in which boredom, slowness and trivial problems are allowed to exist again.
The song continues a thread running through several of my previous songs, where intimate details and ordinary gestures carry a larger Lebanese reality; but it approaches that reality from a quieter angle. Where Yareyt, Maalesh, Deux mondes or Génération Ma Fi Chi moved through longing, contradiction, displacement, collective fatigue or the strange ways we continue living through instability, Shway Shway asks for almost nothing: no heroic gesture, no grand answer, not even a perfect day. Only a few hours in which nothing terrible happens and nobody is required to be strong.
In a place where the extraordinary has become painfully ordinary, perhaps the most extravagant wish is simply this: shway shway – let the world slow down for a while.
