The Importance of General Knowledge

General Knowledge, as explained by Dr. Pamela Chrabieh, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at AUD, is the progressive building of one’s knowledge in diverse areas of knowledge production through multiple means and channels, including reading, traveling, watching movies, listening to music, socializing, cooking and eating unfamiliar types of food, as well as being exposed to arts, to name just a few.

It is about keeping oneself updated with knowledge from every field, beyond just the basic ability of getting good grades and making a social impact. In early times, General Knowledge was not accessible to all; it was confined to an elite. However, with the growing influence of mass media, information has spread like wildfire, but what to do with this information? How should it be processed? These are questions one needs to ask on a regular basis while expanding the contemporary realms of individual and collective knowledge,” she explains.

Dr. Chrabieh recently presented a series of conferences on the importance of General Knowledge to high-school students from diverse academic institutions in Lebanon. General Knowledge plays a pivotal role in a day and age where cities are thriving multicultural hubs. It helps people from different cultures interact effectively with each other. It helps school and university students make an informed choice and formulate an argumentative opinion. It enhances public speaking skills and increases creativity and innovation. “Without a wide array of General Knowledge, one cannot build a better self, nor a better society, let alone inform civil discourse and ascertain the historical significances of events,” concludes Dr. Chrabieh.
