Dar al-Kalima University & CAFCAW “Culture, Religion, Higher Education and Digital Transformation in Southwestern Asia and North Africa” Round Table, June 9-10, 2023, Radisson Beach Resort, Larnaca- Cyprus.

First and foremost, I express my deepest gratitude to the 36 participants from SWANA and diaspora communities in Europe and North-America for their valuable contributions and insightful perspectives that have enriched our discussions and propelled us toward a deeper understanding of the critical themes addressed during this round table.

Throughout our time together, we engaged in three significant sessions, delving into the profound impact of digital transformation in the region. And we worked in groups to identify digital transformation’s main challenges and opportunities, and ways to move forward.

The “higher education” group highlighted the need for upskilling educators, aligning education with future job market demands, and promoting ethical education. The “culture” group emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting cultural tangible and intangible assets, and producing arts&culture through digital transformation, AI, and interdisciplinary collaborations. The “religion” group identified challenges such as resistance to digital transformation by many institutions and the absence of ethical and legal frameworks. They proposed fostering dialogue, specialized training, partnerships, and the creation of local digital platforms.

Overall, the round table underscored the significance of ethical considerations, interdisciplinary co-working, and inclusive dialogue to navigate the complexities of digital transformation in the region and create a sustainable, free, socially just, and ethically grounded digital future.
